Salt mining in Ghana

Salt mining is an old industry in Ghana. Salt was first extracted from the sea by the early inhabitants of the country and was used as a currency by the early kingdoms. In more recent times, salt has been mined from inland lakes and rivers.

Ghana’s salt industry is currently dominated by two companies, namely the Ghana Salt Company Limited and the West African Salt Company Limited. These companies produce salt for both the local market and for export.

The Ghana Salt Company Limited is the largest salt producer in the country. The company has its own private harbour and produces around 1.5 million tonnes of salt per year. The company exports its salt to countries such as Ivory Coast, Togo, Benin and Burkina Faso.

The West African Salt Company Limited is the second largest salt producer in Ghana. The company exports its salt to countries such as Nigeria, Mali and Senegal.
